Under £1000
BMW 328i (92-99)
You can get a decent choice of this 2.8 BMW with all the trimmings, leather etc. Yes it will be high milage, but is it has a good service history you have the performance bargain of the year. Fast rear wheel drive fun with 193BHP and 0-60 in around 7 seconds. The 328i was just below the M3, so it usually is loaded with extras. Just look out for high mileage poorly looked after examplke with no history. If FSH, then you have a good reliable fast car. Or you could buy a 2000 Ford Fiesta 1.25i
Under £5000
2004 Alfa Romeo GT JTDm
That is right, you can get a 150BHP 50MPG Alfa Romeo that looks like THAT for under £5,000. Amazing. Most are full leather or high quality valour bucket seats. Great cruiser for motorways, and stunning head turner, even now for driving around town. Plus being a diesel you its cheap to tax, and run, while also having an amazing amount of mid range pull.
Just look at that car and you tell me its not worth £5,000. Simply a fantastic car, which is also reliable and well built thanks to being made after Alfa's drive to improve quality. Or you could have a 5 year old Ford Focus. Up to you.
Under £20,000
2003 Mercedes SL55 AMG
Unbelievable but you can now get a 500BHP Supercharged V8 Mercedes SL for under £20,000. If you just want a standard 5.0i V8 you can push that price down to £14,000. But I really would recommend the full fat 5.5litre supercharged AMG version. THAT engine is incredible, however AMG overhauled everything and turned this near 2 tonne cruiser into a genuine supercar. this folding hardtop convertible cost £95,000 new, and thanks to depreciation there are examples out there for £20,000. Just wow. All for the same price of a new Vauxhall Insignia.
Under £40,000
2005 Aston Martin V8 Vantage or 2004 Bentley Continental GT
Put away that check book for a run of the mill Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series. For 40 grand you can get either an Aston Martin V8 Vantage or if you are after more of a cruiser a Bentley Continental GT. Two incredible cars that both cost over £80,000 brand new, the Bentley was originally over £100,000. So for new BMW 3 Series money you can now get one of the best looking and sounding cars in the world in the Aston Martin, and an amazing cruiser in the Continental GT with its 6 litre W12 twin turbo engine. Yes it wont do 55MPG like a 320d, but it sure will impress the neighbours, as would the Aston. Incredible road presence are combined with amazing fuel and servicing bills but everytime you open your door, you will smile.
Summary
So they you go. Next time you consider buying a new car, look at what is available used. You could get an amazing car for the same money. Sure the fuel bills and servicing are higher, but if you get a fully documented service history example of any of these cars, you should be put in good stead. Great bargain cars for normal car money.
