Mind Control and Advertising

When you hear the term mind control you think of magicians or some sort of “dark” magic. However even on its basic level, something we see everyday is mind control. Advertising is one of the biggest and most successful forms of mind control in the world. A good advert whether for food, a car or a topical cream uses persuasive techniques to make you want the item even if you do not need it. Even in the early days of television, advertising played a big part. After realising that people spent a long time listening to the radio advertising companies emerged. This natural progression to television meant companies could exploit this new visual method of mass consumption to the ever increasing masses.

In the USA this explosion happened post war, with the rise of such characters as the Marlboro man. The Marlboro man gave off an image of masculinity and adventure. Something the 1950s American male lacked in his perceived world of work, work work. Marlboro used the masculinity to change the idea of filter cigarettes almost single-handedly. Previously to the Marlboro Man filter cigarette were seen as feminine. It was incredibly successful. From 1955 to 1957 Marlboro sales increased from $5bn to $20bn (Roman, K. (2009). The Kings of Madison Avenue. New York: St. Martins Press.). People bought into the idea subconsciously, and have done ever since to many adverts which in the back of your mind can pop up at any time. Advertising is arguably the most powerful form of mind control which is not seen as such due to its range to the masses.
